Reel, Rack & Roam with Chris: Cold Temps, Hot Bites, and Ozarks Outdoor Time

By: Great Escapes Branson / 17 Dec 2025
Winter Fishing in the Ozarks at Great Escapes Branson

If you're thinking winter means it's time to pack away the rods and wait it out… the Ozarks would like a word. ❄️🎣

We're down to the last stretch of the year, and thanks to warmer-than-normal temperatures, the bite is still very much alive. Fewer boats, cooler air, and fish that clearly didn't get the "slow down" memo? We'll take it. 🌤️🐟

Here's what Chris is seeing right now — and why winter might just be your new favorite time to get outside.

Crappie Are Still Showing Off 🎣

Crappie season isn't clocking out just because the calendar flipped.

Chris has been seeing consistent success on jigs and minnows, with fish holding 10–20 feet below the surface, especially around standing timber sitting in 40–60 feet of water 🌊🌲

And the size? Not subtle.
Crappie over 15 inches have been showing up regularly, with 13–14 inch fish being the norm 😮‍💨🐟

Even on cold days in the low 40s, with surface temperatures hovering around 49–50 degrees, the bite has stayed strong. Layers help. So does a good jig. 🧤❄️

Want Help Planning a Winter Trip? Chris Has Options 🧭

If winter fishing sounds great but the planning part feels like work, Chris can help take the guesswork out of it.

  • Need a local guide? He'll point you to a preferred one 🤝

  • Going self-guided? He'll break out the map 🗺️

  • Want to fish spots he trusts? Chris can even share waypoints he uses 📍

Less wandering. More catching. Always a win.

Late-Season Deer Still Have Stories Left 🦌

As deer season winds down, bucks are shifting gears — trading peak rut chaos for food and recovery 🌾

Right now, bucks are hitting food sources hard, but don't count them out just yet. Scents and calling can still be productive, especially if a hot doe enters the picture 👀

Late season may be quieter, but it still has plenty of opportunity if you're paying attention.

Trout & Walleye: The Reliable All-Stars 🎣

Rainbow trout are a year-round Ozarks favorite, and winter is no exception. From bank fishing to wade-in trips, Chris can help plan a trout day that matches your comfort level 🥾🌊

For daily intel, check out Lilley's Landing "One Cast Daily" on YouTube — it's a solid way to keep tabs on conditions.

Walleye are also making a strong showing right now:

  • Crankbaits are getting bites

  • The trusty nightcrawler still deserves its crown 👑

  • Guides are landing fish up to 24 inches in about 20 feet of water, drifting slow with various colored floating jig heads 🐟

Slow down, stay patient, and let the bite come to you.
